What is a BER?
A Building Energy Rating (BER) certificate outlines the energy performance of a building. The rating is similar to the energy label seen on household appliances that indicate their power usage. A BER certificate rates buildings on a scale of A-G with A-rated homes being the most energy efficient, and G-rated the least energy efficient. An higher rating typically means lower energy costs.
Why do I need a BER?
A BER rating is compulsory for all homes, including those for sale or rent. A homeowner availing of the SEAI Better Energy Homes Scheme will require also require a BER following completion of renovation works.
How is a BER calculated?
A BER is assessed from the energy required for space heating, hot water heating, ventilation, and lighting. This varies hugely depending on a number of factors including house size, number of occupants, insulation levels, heating efficiency, and many others
What's does it involve?
An building survey taking approximately one hour, and involves a brief inspection various room. This allows the assessor to gather the information required to carry out a calculation of the BER rating following the assessment. A BER cert can then be issued in as little as 24 hours.
